If it's sombreros and siestas you're expecting, you're in for a big surprise. Since removing many trade protections and signing the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), Mexico has become a competitive member of the global community. Though foreign debt and poverty remain daunting challenges, Mexico has made great strides since the 1990s and is aggressively modernizing. Its nearly 110 million inhabitants are seeing the effects - good and bad - that come with increased exposure to the international marketplace.
Yet some long-held customs and practices are held dear in Mexico - and are much in evidence in the business world. To succeed in business in Mexico, you need to understand some of these deeply ingrained elements of the country's culture. The respect shown people in power and authority, the deference extended to elders and seniority, the importance of nurturing relationships and getting to know people, and the need for patience are all vital elements to bear in mind.
Mexicans love life and are keen to devote as much time and energy to their personal relationships as to their work lives. Being a slave to the clock is definitely not highly valued, which is why patience and flexibility will serve you in great stead in Mexico. Similarly, you should definitely take time to nurture your relationships - both personal and business. It's not uncommon to see a senior manager or the head of a company at an employee's wedding, or other important family celebration. Even if you're in Mexico for only a few days, you'll still need to know whom you're dealing with and be able to forge a good relationship.
As in most societies, though, things are changing and much depends on where you are and the type of business you're involved with. In Mexico City, for instance, more and more people are adopting international norms for interacting and doing business. Here, time increasingly equals money. Move farther away from the big cities and traditions hold fast. Not sure how to navigate the cultural nuances, CultureQuest can help.
